A little bit

*too* nifty.

I was building a 2d graphic design workstation for a business. I recommended we build the system around AMD 64 bit chips *and* 64 bit windows. I thought the windows would be mature enough for primetime by now. Alas.

So the problems began. Press any key to boot from CD.....

Hum, the keyboard doesn't work. Well it works in the bios, but not here...

The old USB keyboard bug back to haunt me, in 2006. So I track down an old PS/2 keyboard so I can "press any key". Right then, the all original(!) windows installs.

So let's get on the interwb and get all those updates, get the email working and so on... No. There exists *no* driver for the built in network on 64 bit windows. Well, throw in an old generic network card and voila... it works.

So installing the all original(!) MS Office. Fast and without nasty messages, until Outlook claims to not find the mailserver. I call ISP which tells me to M$ which wants NOK 620 to answer a single question. Fuck that. Download The Bat, my email client of choice -voila, it works...

Connect the printer, hum, browse around, YES! a beta 64 bit driver, hooray, and it even works. Built in audio... yes! another beta driver, that only took 12 hours, what a breeze.

But then the system breaks, no 64 bit scanner driver. I search in vain on the less advertised sides of the internet, fuck HP -they haven't written a single 64 bit scanner driver, hereby on my boycot list.

I present the sad story to the poor user of the computer, we decide to try to trade in the windows for a 32 bit version but I suppose you know how that went... poorly.

So, left with no choice but to buy a new scanner we browse the stores, noone can guarantee operation on 64 bit system. Many say -WILL NOT WORK. What is this? A conspiracy? Until we come over a brand new way overspecified Canon for twice the amount of money we're really willing to spend, it has a 64 bit driver...

Jesus Fucking Christ, pardon my french.

sold.

Not in store, must order, wait two more days, business is pressing, time is short and I've already spent 24 hours on this computer.

This sucks!
