DIY video projector
Following the lead from THGs (www.tomshardware.com) me and bjorn built a video projector. We used an old viewsonic LCD monitor and a quite powerful overhead projector, we bought both on ebay for ca. $200. Assembly took a couple of hours.
The screen is 1024x768 and thus we have almot a megapixel display on our wall, the projector is 3000 ANSI lumens and bright enough to see in daylight. Counterstrike is alot more fun to play on a 3x3 meter display, and yesterday I saw the adventures of Ford Fairlane on it.
We tore down the studio and emptied the room, we put in a pair of Fluance ES-1 speakers as the front speakers, some old Advance speakers for the rear, a quite large('bout 10kg.) Denon surround amp to power them and fed 4 channel output from the built-in soundcard on the motherboard to it.
Perfect for games, but watching Ford Fairlane made it pretty obvious that you need a center channel to hear what the actors are saying. Put one in today.
The pc(which I also built for mr.b) is an amd64 3200 socket 939 with 1 gb ram and a radeon 9600, it eats most games for breakfast despite the crappy gfx card(it has no fan -why i picked it).
It would appear that my pcs are popular for I am now to build another one, and I will actually get paid for it. My pcs, in contradiction to most of the stuff out there, is built for you. That is, they only have the features you want and chucks away the rest. This is highly economical and it allows me to be cheaper than everyone else out there, it also means they're built for the exact budget.
Mr. b has alot of external drives and I'm sold on the concept, it's definetly the way to go. When you don't need to open the pc all the time to exchange a drive there is less wear and less can go wrong all the time.
So I basically put in the smallest system drive I can get. My next move will be 10k rpm drives. The 37gb ones are perfect for windows and software, though still a bit expensive.
Anyway, it looks like all I'll get out of this trip is building hardware.
I wanna go out on the streets and film, but mr. b say no. It's too dangerous he says, well I'm willing to risk it for a good film. I think he's just embarrased, like alot of people who's not really having to do anything to have a good life he gets easily embarrased. Can't be seen doing this, can't be seen doing that.
But I can't film myself can I, so that was that, no film in america. I have wasted my time being here but that doesn't matter, I've saved money and that I had precious little of to begin with. I think it's sad though, the light here is really something(diffusion from pollution) and here I can make something that looks better and feels more real that I can in europe. I'm in wonderland right?
